L5970 : HIGH EFFICIENCY STEP-DOWN SWITCHING CONVERTER ![]() The L5970 is a monolithic step-down switching regulator capable of delivering up to 1A output current. The input voltage can range from 4.4V up to 36V and the output voltage can be adjusted from 0V up to 35V. The on-chip 250m½ P-Channel MOS reduces the conduction losses especially for large duty cycles, which can range up to 100 %. Furthermore no external bootstrap capacitor is required. The new design techniques and sub-micron technology allow very high efficiency (in all output power conditions), keep the quiescent current below 2.5mA (maximum) and a standby current consumption in the range of 50µA (typical). A very high switching frequency, internally fixed at 250khz allows a considerable reduction in the size of the external components (LC output filter). This, along with the minimum number of external components required, leads to a very small and compact design. Other features include: Frequency Foldback which avoids any output voltage overshoot, during start-up; in short circuit condition the current is at a constant value; inhibit function; a very precise reference voltage; thermal shutdown and a synchronization pin for up to six devices. The L5970 is housed in MINIDIP8 and SO8 packages, very attractive for distributed power supplies in applications such as STB/DVB, DVD, XDSL, web phones, printers, LCD monitors and portable equipment in the industrial and consumer fields. ![]() |
