STi5500: THE ULTIMATE IN INTEGRATION SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics will be entering volume production of the STi5500, later this year. This is the first in a family of highly integrated devices which combine an MPEG-2 audio/video decoder with a 32-bit microprocessor and other functions to create a complete DVD or set-top box back-end on a single chip. The availability of sample devices allows customers to begin immediately with development of second generation set-top boxes and DVD players. Designed to replace three existing ICs, the STi5500 will be used in second-generation set-top box systems and DVD players. With the STi5500, ST offers set-top box and DVD makers an opportunity to reduce decoder engine costs quickly with minimal effort and risk. The device is compatible with the first generation ST set-top box chipset. It assures a fast migration to the new one-chip solution, plus the certainty that all the major functional blocks have already been proven in millions of end products. ST's leadership in this fast-growing market was confirmed in 1997 by industry analyst Dataquest in a report that estimates that ST had a 71.4% share of the market for MPEG-2 decoders which are used in consumer electronics products such as digital set-top boxes and the forth coming DVD systems. ST was also the first company to offer complete front-to-back chip-set solutions for the DVB and DirectTV() set-top box markets with its STi3520 MPEG-2 decoder, STV0190 ADC, STV0196 Link IC, the ST20-based programmable transport IC and STV0116 and STV0117 PAL/NTSC digital encoders. ![]() The STi5500 is the first of a series of devices based on the OMEGA decoder engine. Future products in the series will be tailored to meet the specific needs of different applications such as the Satellite TV, Cable TV and DVD markets. A DVD-specific part, includes the MPEG-2/Dolby AC-3 audio decoder function. Other specific part available for integration include graphics and DSP accelerators and high-speed interface parts, including V.34 modem and IEEE-1394. ![]() |
