CEA signs research contract with the partners of the Crolles2 Alliance for development of 45 nm and 32 nm CMOS nanoelectronic technologies

Grenoble, April 22nd 2004 - CEA (French Atomic Energy Commission) today signed a four-year R&D contract (2004 - 2007) with the three partners of the Crolles2 Alliance: STMicroelectronics, Philips and Freescale Semiconductor, Inc., a subsidiary of Motorola that formerly conducted business as Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector (SPS). The agreement foresees the joint development of nanoelectronic technologies for 45-, 32-nanometer-and-below CMOS nodes on 300mm wafers.

The research will be carried out by CEA-Leti (Electronics and Information Technologies Laboratory of the CEA) in a new 300mm facility in Grenoble, called Nanotec 300, which was inaugurated today. This facility comprises 1,000 square meters of clean room and an extensive range of equipment for fabrication and characterization / metrology of electronic devices, such as transistors, on 300 millimeter wafers. Research activities will cover four areas: advanced patterning; front-end materials and process steps; advanced devices; and back-end materials and process steps. The programs will be carried out in conjunction with the existing relationships between the three Crolles2 Alliance members and their research partners, including IMEC in Leuven, Belgium and the Dan Noble Center in Austin, Texas, USA.

This agreement is a logical extension of the previous CMOS research program on 200 mm wafers between CEA-Leti and STMicroelectronics in the Grenoble area. As part of this long-term collaboration, there was a permanent exchange of researchers between the teams of the two sites, along with the exchange of wafers between the two facilities, where standard CMOS processes were performed at Crolles and the more advanced technologies were performed in the nearby CEA-Leti premises, and therefore, fully optimizing the total research investment. A similar approach will be taken in the new agreement.

Nanotec 300 represents a key research initiative in microelectronics, significantly enhancing the importance of the Grenoble region as a major center of excellence worldwide in micro and nano-technologies. The project Nanotec 300 is supported by a total investment of 300 million euros funded by the members of the Crolles2 Alliance, the French Government and the local authorities (Rhone Alpes Region, General Council of Isere, Grenoble Urban Council -Metro-, and the City of Grenoble).

Crolles2 AllianceAbout the Crolles2 Alliance Under a five-year agreement extending through to December 2007, the Crolles2 Alliance brings together STMicroelectronics, Philips and Freescale Semiconductor, Inc., a subsidiary of Motorola that formerly conducted business as Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector (SPS). in an alliance of unprecedented scope in the microelectronics sector.
Their joint Crolles2 center will focus on specific technologies at the forefront of semiconductor R&D: baseline CMOS processing, embedded memories (static, dynamic and magnetic RAM), Silicon-On-Insulator, analog CMOS, advanced process modules, advanced copper interconnect, low-power designs and RF capabilities. Starting at 90nm, the alliance will continue on and develop CMOS processes at 65nm, 45nm and, ultimately, the 32nm node.
The Alliance has already demonstrated successful cooperation between the partners with the early availability of the industry's first 90nm CMOS design platform and cell libraries for system-on-chip solutions.
The Crolles2 Alliance research effort is supported by the French Government and local authorities (Rhone Alpes Region, General Council of Isere, the City of Grenoble, the Grenoble Urban Council -Metro-, the Gresivaudan Council -COSI-, and the Town of Crolles).
